The arrival of Ancelotti in January was a good thing because he had six months to get used to the team, the club and the mentality of the French League. Depending on the draw of the group stages they could easily get through to the last sixteen and go on to surprise a few big clubs
So says French football journalist Julien Laurens who joins us on the Padcast this week. He thinks the big-spending PSG can take Europe by storm after their takeover by Qutar Sports Investments.
The French team have certainly made a statement in the transfer window bringing in stars such as Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi from Napoli and of course Zlatan Ibrahimovic from AC Milan. Carlo Ancelotti has built a team that is expected to win Ligue One without getting out of second gear but can they succeed on the European stage?
Manchester City couldn’t win the Champions League in the first season after their big investment so what makes PSG different? Julien believes there is a genuine possibility that they could surprise the giants of European football and create history.
The Padcast also looks at Arsenal’s chances for the season after Arsene Wenger said the money splashed around by the likes of PSG, City and Chelsea was ruining football. Let’s not forget that the Gunners haven’t been shy with the cheque-book this summer and the fans will be demanding silverware. Do they have a realistic chance of success this year?
